Dear Spring Mountain Homeowners,

Idaho Department of Fish and Game is aware that a black bear sow with three cubs is
frequenting your neighborhood and getting into trash. We are hoping to prevent this sow from
teaching her cubs to rely on human food sources, which will eventually lead to them becoming
habituated or getting into trouble.
Problem bears are easy to create but hard to “fix” after they’ve learned to get into human
garbage. Unfortunately, if they become particularly bold and are deemed to be a potential risk
to humans, they cannot be trapped and relocated, and instead must be trapped and
euthanized.
To avoid this outcome, we are asking Spring Mountain residents to help by doing the following:
· Keep trash in a secure garage until morning of pickup, or until you’re able to haul it away.
· If trash must be left outside, ensure that all trash is in a fully closed bear-resistant trash
can.
· Make sure other food sources, such as pet food or barbecue grills, are clean and
inaccessible to bears.
